We drove to Fargo today. It was a bit hazy but otherwise good weather for driving and it was an uneventful day. We were both quite surprised by the beauty of the landscape and again, by how far you can go without seeing another car on the road.Â
I'd switched our hotel reservation for Fargo just days before we left. I'm sure we would have been happy with the original choice but I'm so glad we switched. We are at The Hotel Donaldson right in downtown. There are only seventeen rooms and it is a delight of a hotel. Our room is huge and each room features the work of a different local artist. We came back from our evening out to a turndown service - lights dimmed, chocolate truffles and a CD of a local musician playing.Â
Of course no post about Fargo could go without mention of one of the greatest movies ever. I know it wasn't filmed in Fargo but the vibe is strong here. We stopped for a beer at a local "eatery and back alley bar" and I swear it was like we had a half hour conversation with Jerry Lundegaard himself. He gave us each a small glass of his homemade limoncello and talked about his grandchildren. He asked if we were going to settle down in Fargo and when we said no, he said that may be the greatest mistake we've ever made. Tomorrow we head for Duluth and another cousin meet up.
