Today we drove from Montreal to a small lake town in the Adirondacks in New York. It was a short, easy drive and we were there by lunchtime. It's a small hamlet called Schroon Lake. We originally planned four nights in Montreal but when we realized our drive from there to Brooklyn would be on the Friday of Labor Day weekend we decided it made sense to get a little head start across the border. It was only about 2.5 hours from Montreal but worlds apart. It also happens to be the small town where my mom and her first husband, John spent the summer the first year they were married. They lived beneath the restaurant where they worked and my mom waitressed for the first (and I think only) time. That was the summer of 1946 - and that restaurant is still there. Of course we had to go.It was remodeled by new owners a few years ago but the walls are covered with old photographs. The food was excellent. Our waitress told us that the granddaughter of the original owners still comes in to bake the pies.Â
We were definitely due for a laundry day and there happened to be a nice laundromat right on the main street with views of the lake. We popped a load in and then wandered around a bit. It was a perfect summer day.
By the time our laundry was finished it was close to check in time at our hotel so we headed over to see if our room was ready. We stayed at the Lodge at Schroon Lake which in its previous life was a religious retreat. The original buildings are there along with many new ones and it was fabulous. I think it just re-opened in June. We just stayed in the main lodge but there are lake view cabins available which have two bedrooms. We would both love to go back for a longer visit as it was such a relaxing place to be.Â
Friday - the last drive of the cross country journey!
